Things you should know when bringing home your new rescue dog.

Writer: Amanda BuckAmanda Buck

Bringing home a new dog can be a very happy moment for the entire family, but there are some key points you should be aware of in order to help you with making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone.

The Decompression Stage

For most rescue dogs moving into a new environment with new people, in a mostly different lifestyle, can be a lot to handle at once. It is important that we assist these dogs in coping with this transition during the decompression process by being understanding and patient. Typically we advise new adopters to to give their dogs a minimum of two weeks to acclimate.

Every dog is an individual and will adapt to this new stage of their lives differently. It is up to the new family to give them enough space and patience to move at their own pace.

A few activities or tips that we recommend during this time:

Crate or alone time

Allowing your new dog to have designated times throughout the day where they are placed in a crate of separate room.

Sniffy or free walks

This is when we take our dogs out on leash in a primarily slow traffic area for them to engage with the environment with the freedom to use their sniffing senses to decompress.

Slow introductions to other pets, friends or family

Give your new dog time to be introduced to other pets in the home as well as new people. This kind of stimuli can be overwhelming for them and rushing this process can cause more harm if the dog is not ready.

No intense obedience work or corrections

During these first few weeks you should be focusing on developing a bond based on trust and respect. Applying too much obedience and especially corrections can be damaging to that relationship. Instead focus on fun, engaging, and rewarding exercises that will help your new dog associate you with positive experiences.

Allowing your dog the time to decompress and become comfortable in their new environment can set your future relationship up for success. Remember bringing a new rescue dog home is a lifetime commitment and being patient and understanding during those first few weeks is a great start to a long lasting harmonious life together.
